Motivation is dead

How not to move in 2026

Not quite sure when it hit me, but when it did, it did. The thought was motivation by definition was not what I needed moving forward in my life.

The mind conjures all sorts of things. Visions of success. Dreams finally coming true. And still, one could lack the motivation to begin. According to  author, podcast host Mel Robbins, “Motivation is garbage. You’re never going to feel like it,” she revealed on the Theory Impact podcast.

Finally someone said it. That motivation alone is not enough to achieving life goals or aspirations, big or small. For the past ten or so years, motivational speakers and life coaches have inundated social media with clips of their screaming rants, quotes, seminars, and book tours. And how many consumers of their content really changed their life, long term?

We’ve had enough motivational content for ten lifetimes that is most likely keeping us stuck, scrolling and watching. For real forward movement in 2026, here’s some alternatives:

#1 Curate your timeline

Only have useful content on your social media if you must scroll. Things that you’re interested in is very narrow when you think about it. Curate your timeline to only show what your interests are.

#2 Get real self care

This includes decluttering living spaces to engaging in interests that boosts confidence. Self care is not limited to aesthetics (new wardrobe, massages, etc). But things that bring you joy even if it excludes others.

#3 Get rest

One of the most basic and mandatory life needs is getting adequate rest. This should be a part of your lifestyle aside from self care. If you’re not getting enough rest find it, create it. No exceptions.

#4 Go with the flow

Don’t feel like cleaning the house in a particular moment? Don’t. What do you feel like doing in the moment? Do that. Doing what flows is the spark to momentum. Great, productive things stem from momentum.

#5 Do what comes natural

Let go of challenges or going against the grain in life or career endeavors. If its meant to be it will be. Doing what comes natural is the best way to get started without needing to be motivated.

Each new year doesn’t need to involve resolutions and being motivated to finally do the undone. Rather each day presents a new opportunity to increase self awareness leading to a more plentiful, peaceful, and joyful life.
