Social media engagement for many is a one way street

Here you are, scrolling the social media streets to come across a video that peeks your interest. You stop to let the video play, then scroll on to see another video of the same creator before. You watch it, like it, love it, laugh. Soon enough you’re checking out their page for more content. You check out the comments and there’s one striking thing to note; the creator never engages. Ever.

Since when did not interacting or engaging with your viewers become not cool? A simple like or short reply on a positive comment to let them know “I see you.”

Are content creators with massive followings too busy to engage on a few comments  here and there? Do they not read them at all? Skim through?

Social media is not for sharing alone. It serves as a way to connect with people we don’t know with similar interests. A place for sharing information or engaging in lighthearted banter. But some take their platforms and popularity too seriously. How off putting is it to see their zero following count on their profiles? Or hundreds sometimes thousands of comments without a single like from its creator?

John Dewey said it best, “The deepest urge in human nature is the desire to be important.” A pretty good cause to post content and build a following. However creators must not forget their followers would like to feel important too.
